Tower of National Power Transmission Line on the banks of the Padma at Kushtia
At least six more towers are at risk of collapse in Saheb Nagar village of Bahalbaria upazila of Mirpur upazila.In Kushtia, a tower of the national power transmission fell into the river due to the erosion of the Padma river.
Around 12 noon on Thursday, a tower of the National Grid, standing under extreme risk due to the ongoing flood, completely collapsed under the river.
Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited (PGCB) Ishwaradi Circle Supervising Engineer Shariful Islam confirmed this information. He said, "The risk was reported to the concerned authorities a week ago. As a result, power supply to the transmission line was stopped. In this event, there will be no impact on the national power transmission line.Electricity was supplied from Bhermara to Rajbari through this transmission line. Now as an alternative, electricity is being supplied from Faridpur to Rajbari. At least six more towers are in danger of collapsing in Saheb Nagar village of Bahalbaria union of Mirpur upazila, this official said.
Locals complain that the river has lost its course due to the construction of the Rooppur nuclear power plant port in the main flow channel of about 500 meters of groin dam. In this, Padma has become aggressive in search of new direction.
Hundreds of hectares of cropland in Kushtia Sadar, Mirpur and Bheramara upazilas along with houses and public and private infrastructure have been destroyed in the severe erosion. Besides, Kushtia-Ishwardi National Highway, country's largest irrigation project and 410 mega combined cycle power plant are in extreme danger. The people of the affected area have blocked the road and protested and human chained to protect their existence, demanding permanent measures to prevent this total erosion of Padma river.

Rashidur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board (PIBO), said that erosion has been going on in some villages of Bheramara and Mirpur upazilas on the right bank of Padma river since a few years ago. They have already approved the development project worth about one and a half thousand crore rupees to prevent erosion. imageHe said, "The contract with the contracting organization is in the process of calling for tenders for the implementation of the project. At the same time, immediate sand-filled geo bags are being dropped to prevent ongoing erosion on an urgent basis. As soon as the water of Padma recedes, the work of implementing the project to prevent erosion will begin permanently.”
